How to keep fit at school….

Hello,

This week for reading we were looking at synthesising. That means as you read you are putting together information we have read with what we already know to come up with a new or deeper understanding about a topic/idea.

We read a text about how your health can be affected from sitting too long.

It was interesting that Less blood and oxygen are pumped to your brain when you sit. Your thinking and learning slows down. It’s harder for you to concentrate and you can become stressed out.

I didn’t know that Research by Dr James Levine in the United States suggests that fidgeting and making regular, small movements burns calories and is healthy for you.

I wonder why there are so many people that reaserched this topic

Do you have any ideas on how to keep fit at school?

How can we be Champions of Peace?

How can we be Champions of Peace

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are a dove and a olive branch. Another one is the white poppy.

These symbols represent peace because the dove and olive branch represent Hope, Honesty, Purity, and Peace. Doves are mentioned many times in the bible, from the baptism of Jesus to after the flood, when Noah sent out a dove and it returned with an olive branch (a sign of dry land nearby). Then the white poppy is also a symbol of peace because Like the red poppy, the white badge also symbolizes remembrance for victims of war.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My peace artwork represents peace because it has a peace symbol on it and it has colors that are peaceful.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Mother Teresa. I thought this person was a champion of peace because She created many homes for the dying and the poor. St Teresa strongly thought that nonviolence was better for everyone.

(Link to Work.)

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it helped me to understand more about it and become a happier and kinder person.

I learnt that the first key to peace is wisdom. The next key is courage. Then the third key is acceptance.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by loving others for who they are and following in there foot steps.

How can you be a champion of peace?

Razzle Reading

Hello and welcome back to another blog,

This week for reading we were set to work on reading a book called how to fall.  We were working on identifying several ideas and the relationships in the text. I found this book very interesting to read becuase it went more into depth about Mayas emotions. For our create we had to make a diary ( Mayas diary ) and act like if we were Maya. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Diary Stay out mum!!

Shapes! Shapes! and more Shapes!

Kia ora,

This week for math we were asked to make a tiled pattern floor that needed to have six complementary colours and six diffrent shapes with in it. We had to make sure that it was symmetrical meaning that it was the same on each side. The colours I used was Green, red, purple, magenta, yellow, orange. Then the shapes I used were rectangles, circles, hearts, Flower chart: Delay, Cloud, cross. What shapes would you have picked if you did my create?

Please feel free to leave a comment below 🙂

Super Science!

In Science we have been learning about electricity. There are lots of different types of energy such as gravitational, electrical, elastic, heat, sound, light, mechanical, chemical and nuclear. Did you know that energy is all around you? It is the force that allows things to go, move and happen.

One of the experiments we did was called battery power.

  • Materials needed :
  • ´T´ beaker
  • ´S´ beaker
  •  specimen jar
  •  zinc nails
  • copper nails
  • Water
  • Salt
  • buzzer (metal clips).

My Hypothesis:Before conducting my experiment I thought that once the water got poured into the empty jar the buzzer would make a sound.

What I discovered: After finishing my experiment I found out that my hypothesis was incorrect because once the teaspoon of salt was put into the jar of water it made the irons inside of the water move which formed the buzzer to turn on. Basically the salt was like a battery. If I only used water in the jar and didn’t add the salt the irons inside wouldn’t have moved and formed the buzzer to turn on. We also had to make sure that we had one copper nail connected to the metal clips and the jar and one zinc nail connected to the jar and metal clips. We also had to make sure that the copper nail was connected to the red wire and the zinc was connected to the black wire.

Out of all the experiments we did I really enjoyed doing Battery power because it challenged me and it was also lots of fun to build it.

Something I found challenging was making sure that the correct wires were on the correct nails.

Have you ever tried a Science experiment before?

Cinderella and the broken glass (Part 2)

Hello,

Over the past couple weeks in writing we have been writing a play based of well known fairy tales. Such as sleeping beauty, Snow white, The ugly duckling and so much more. I decided to base my fairytale of Cinderella but there was a twist. We had to change the story up a bit so it was different to the actual fairytale. On my blog I made a part one of my writing that said to be continued…and here is part two! I hope you enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoyed making it 🙂

Wonderful writing

Kia ora and welcome back to another blog,

Over the past couple weeks in writing we have been writing a play based of well known fairy tales. Such as sleeping beauty, Snow white, The ugly duckling and so much more. I decided to base my fairytale of Cinderella but there was a twist. We had to change the story up a bit so it was different to the actual fairytale. I hope you enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoyed making it 🙂

If you were to make this what fairytale would you base yours of?

Cinderella and the broken glass

Main Characters: Ella, Aunt lucy, Ashley, Veronica, Prince Albert,

(The story takes place in a Large Cottage with lots of Bush and rolling farmland around it)

Ella: (Holding her fathers hand)

Ella: Father, please don’t go

Ella’s father: There is no need to worry my dear, your aunt Lucy is coming to stay and your two lovely cousins Ashley and Veronica. They will take great care of you. ( Starts to cry ) My country needs me to fight in the army and protect others which includes you my love

Ella: (weeping) Promise me that you will come back?

Ella’s father: I will not always be there to protect you but I will be there to guide you.Let me tell you something my Father told me when I was your age. If you ever feel lost look at the stars because I will be watching you and guiding you (Hops in the carriage and drives away),

( Only a few minutes later a white carriage arrives in front of the stairs that leads up to the cottage that Ella has been sitting on watching as her father drives away in the carriage drawn by horses)

Ella: (Stands up and wipes the tears of her cheeks)

( As the carriage stops in front of the reasonably big couttge out walks two pale cheeked girls with pink and purple frilled dress)

Ella: ( in a polite voice) Hello I am Ell..

Ashley: (Starts chatting away to her sister about how weird Ella looks)

Veronica: (Also starts to whisper about Ella)

Veronica: (discussed) Eww I just got my new Gucci shoes stuck in this mud!!

( just as Ella is about to try to introduce herself to them again a rather tall skinny lady with dark black hair and a green emerald color dress appears from out of the carriage and stands before Ella in disapproval)

Aunt lucy: (In a posh voice) You must be Ella, I am your Aunt lucy and this is my two astonishing daughters Ashely and Veronica

(Ashley and Veronica push past Ella with there luggage and enter the house giggling and  arguing about who would get what room)

Aunt lucy: (With a smirk on her face) My daughters have a lot of clothes and dresses so if you dont mind can you sleep in the attic so you don’t take up too much room?

Ella: (hesintiley) Yes Miss

Aunt lucy: Please call me Aunt lucy dear

(A few hours later when the sun had gone down Ella found herself on the cold hard floor of the attic. Suddenly Ella hears a squeaking sound and little paws skittering across the floor boards)

Ella: (Quickly gets up)

(Out of the corner of her eye she spots two little brown mice nibbling at a old crusted peace of bread lying on the floor)

Ella: (reaches her hand out to pet the mice) Hello my sweetys would you like to come with me and I can get you some grapes?

(The mouse sniff Ellas hand in approval as Ella gives them a pat on the back)

Ella: ( walks down the stairs that leads to the attic as the mouse follow her down the stairs)

(When ella walks into the kitchen she can hear plates crashing)

Ella: (Mutters under her breath) Who can that be at this time of night?

(As Ella walks into the kitchen she finds Jermole Aunt lucy’s cat rushing around the room chasing a little black mouse)

Ella: (Picks up Jermole and puts him outside)

Ella: ( Walks back into the kitchen and starts grabbing a plate and a vine of grapes from the fruit bowl. She places it on the ground and the three little mice run up to it and start nibbling at it)

(The next morning Ella wakes up to chatting voices)

Veronica: (Snobbish) Wake up I am hungry!

Ashley: Why are you sleeping by the fire?

(Ella wakes up to find she had fallen asleep by the fire and was covered in cinders. Ella must have got cold and fell asleep by the fire)

Aunt lucy: You are covered in Cinders!!

Ashley: (Starts laughing) We should call her…

Ashley and Veronica: (Giggling)  Cinderella!!

(While Aunt lucy, Ashley and Veronica laugh over Ella’s new nickname name Ella gets of the floor and starts to dust herself of)

Aunt lucy: Cinderella, go get us some bread for breakfast from the town

(Ella walks to the local town to pick up some bread but once she arrives she sees one of the princes guards in the middle of the town)

Princes guard: (In a polish voice) Ladies and gentlemen the prince has requested everyone in the town is invited to the ball

(Ella walks up to a girl standing in a white cotton dress)

Ella: (Talking to the girl) Excuse me, but what is going on here?

The little girl: You didn’t come here? Prince Albert is putting on a ball and everyone is invited. He will choose one person from the ball to marry!

(Prince’s guard starts to hand out invites to the ball. Once Ella gets home she rushes into the house existed)

Ella: Aunt lucy? Ashley? Veronica? I have some news!

(Ashley and Veronica come rushing down the stairs)

Ashley: Oooo what is it! I hope you got the breed I am starving

Ella: No I didn’t get it sorry because I got distracted by the existing news I am about to tell you

Ashley: Aghh just tell us!

(Veronica snaches the invite out of her hand and starts to read it out loud)

Veronica: (Reading the invite) Dear people of Château town, you have been invited to Prince Albert’s ball where he will choose 1 lady who he shall marry…

Ashley and Veronica: (High pitched) Ekkkkkkk!

Veronica: I bet he will choose me!

Ashley: (annoyed) No me!!

(As Ashley and Veronica argue about who the prince will choose Aunt lucy walks into the room where the three girls are standing)

Aunt lucy: What is all this about?

Ella: (In an excited voice) The prince has invited us to the ball and he will choose one girl to marry

Aunt lucy: What do you mean?

Ella: You, Ashley, Veronica, and me…

Aunt lucy: (Laughing) You! Going to the ball. Haha what a joke!

Ella: (Sad) Why not? The prince said ALL is invited to the ball?

Aunt lucy: Because…The prince will not want a dirty filthy girl at his sophisticated ball

Ella: But..

Aunt lucy: NO BUTS! I said you are not going is that clear?

Ella: (Sad) Yes madam

Aunt lucy: Besides you can stay busy by cleaning up the house

To be continued….

Wicked writing

Hello and welcome back to another blog,

This week for writing we have been focusing on making Characters based on fairy tales. I decided to pick Cinderella because it is a fairy tail that I know well.

One thing that I have learnt while making these characters was what a round character and a flat character is. A round character is someone that reveals various, and sometimes contradictory, personality traits. A flat character though is someone who reveals only one character trait.

We had to make a character profile that would help us write our play in the future. In my story I decided to change it up a bit and make it that Cinderella’s glass shoe got broken. I also made a character profile for my antoginist which in this story is Cinderellas Aunt lucy. Here is a photo of my character profiles

If you were to make this what story would you choose to make your play about?

Great GEM

Over the course of term one we have looked at the question: How can we help build a resilient community? We are using something called The Resilience Project to understand simple tricks to make our lives better.

I have learnt that GEM stands for Gratitude, Empathy and mindfulness. But what does G.E.M mean?

Gratitude is about focusing on what’s good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have. It also shows that you have the appreciation to return kindness. But why is gratitude so important? Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, and build strong relationships.

How can you show gratitude?

1.Really pay attention to those good things. Express your gratitude to yourself, write it down, or thank someone.

  1. Show your appreciation to someone who did something nice
  2. Write down in a book everything you are grateful for. This could include family, pets, animals, fresh water, earth, selter, loving person, food, clothes and so much more

Empathy:

Empathy is about the ability to understand another person’s thoughts and feelings in a situation from their point of view, rather than your own. How does empathy help others? It helps us understand how others are feeling so we can respond appropriately to the situation. Ways you can show empathy towards others:

  1. If someone is hurt help them
  2. If someone is sad ask them what is wrong and then LISTEN to them
  3. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and think about how they might be feeling

Mindfulness:

Mindfulness is about being completely aware of what’s happening in the present—of all that’s going on inside and all that’s happening around you. How is mindfulness important? It calms the body and can help with your mental health and fiscal health. Ways to do mindfulness is….

  1. Sometimes just spending time in nature can really help you to calm down and focus on what’s around you. You can spend just five minutes listening to the animals and nature that folds around you.

  1. Grab a pen and paper and head outside. Close your eyes and listen to 5 things you can here, 4 things you can feel and 3 things you can touch

  1. Go onto youtube and find a meditation mindfulness video to listen to click on me!

The whole school had a showcase evening to look at all the students’ creations and learn more about The Resilience Project.

For the showcase evening I worked with Sophie M, Selah and Kamryn

We decided to create painted rocks and a video. The video was made as a skit to teach others about GEM and how to do mindfulness. We made the rocks so that everyone around Christchurch could learn more about GEM and every time they would take a look at it they would remember to practice GEM. If you are to find one of our amazing rocks around christchurch please hide it again so someone else has the opportunity to see it as well.

Here is my final creation:

I now know more about what GEM is and how I can use it in my life to be happier.

Throughout the creating process I feel like I did really well working with my friends and being supportive of their ideas. I could have been better at being more prepared like bringing headphones for the video because not many people could hear it.

If I was to do this again, next time I would decide to make something a little bit more challenging and engaging to other people. I would also remember to bring googly eyes for the ladybug rocks.

Which rock was your favorite and which one would you choose to hide around christchurch?

Thank you for reading my blog and making sure to practice GEM whenever you get the chance to.

Reflection on Term 1

Tena koutou katoa,

This term has been filled with lots of fun and education.

Two things that have gone well this term would be: the triathlon. It was very tiring but I pushed through and did an awesome job. There were around 600 kids from canterbury. It was holded on a working farm which meant there was a lot of cow poo but most of it was picked up. I even saw some horses when I was biking on the road. Next would have to be Tec because it was so much fun learning how to sew and creating my very own bag to take home and show my whanau. We focused it on the environment. Mine was a bag with a cow on it that said STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY.

One thing that I need to work on would be charging my chromebook in the cow because lately I have been not charging it and having to go in a different workshop

Five things that I have learnt this term:

  1. Idiom Is a speech that is not taken literally such as it is raining cats and dogs or bite the bullet
  2. Simile a figure of speech comparing two unlike things such as your cheeks are pink like roses
  3. Colon is usually used to make lists or a new sentence such as you will need: Icecream, berrys, and bananas.
  4. Synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another word such as Simple, effortless, straightforward.
  5. Exaggeration is a statement that is worse or bigger than it should be such as that house is as big as the sun.

This term I was insprired to use Idioms more when I speek at home and to my freinds.
